AbstractThis research examined the career progression journey of three women who had held executive administrative positions in a land-grant, doctoral institution of higher education. This qualitative study used portraiture, field notes, and document review to examine the career journeys of these three women. The guiding question of the study was, What are the supports and barriers experienced by women as they ascended to their executive administrative positions in higher education at a land-grant institution? This review included how they perceived the supports and barriers that they encountered, as well as their perceptions of their leadership style. The leadership style research was focused on the question of whether women must lead with agentic characteristics to be effective leaders. Themes were identified regarding support from extended family, attainment of the doctorate, review of navigation of career labyrinth, gender bias and its effect on career, the effect of attitude, a need for mentors and networks, and their leadership philosophy. The research revealed that two of the participants perceived that gender bias did not affect their ability to progress in their career. It was recommended to create a vehicle for changing men and women's attitudes toward gender bias, raise awareness of the benefits of a mentor program, and raise awareness of career opportunities for women in higher education.
