Abstract | Al-Kashi's 1427 "Key to Arithmetic" had important use over several hundred years in mathematics teaching in Medieval Islam throughout the time of the Ottoman Empire. Its pedagogical features have never been studied before. In this dissertation I have made a close pedagogical analysis of these features and discovered several teaching aspects that are different from most teaching today. In particular al-Kashi presents multiple paths to practice mathematics. He presents multiple definitions, multiple algorithms, multiple formulas, and multiple solution methods as a pervasive feature of his pedagogy. And he expounds an exhaustive exclusive classification method for mathematical objects. I present and contrast examples of each one. Finally I suggest some ways to compare the "Key to Arithmetic" with other historical sources. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
