AbstractThere are approximately 15 million school-age children left unsupervised during hours when school is not in session. Studies indicate that crime (drug use, violent, abuse) triples for school-aged children (Kinder through 12th grade) and the risk of becoming a victim of such crimes increases during non-school hours. Providing additional learning opportunities and a safe place to stay for students during out of school time hours could help keep students out of trouble, help them engage in academics, and assist them in their overall development. Since federal monies are used to fund programs like Out-of-School Time (OST) through No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and The American Recovery Act (Race to the Top grants), students with disabilities have a legal right to participate in OST programs. Yet very few students with disabilities participate in OST programs. This study will assess graduate students' knowledge and perceptions of Out-of-School Time programs and characteristics of students with disabilities.
