AbstractThe low levels of job satisfaction visible in school systems across America may be the cause of teacher attrition and shortages. By comparing successful factors in charter schools and traditional public schools that relate to job satisfaction, the purpose of this correlational quantitative study was to assist the educational leadership of new and restructured schools to identify and recognize factors related to job satisfaction among teachers. A Likert-type survey was conducted with two groups of 50 participants, 100 K-8 grade charter school and traditional public schoolteachers. The results confirmed that employment factors measured by the Purdue Teacher Opinionaire relate to job satisfaction among teachers in both educational systems. The findings of the study showed almost no significant differences p > 0.05 between the charter schools and traditional public schools. The variability within the charter school group was much greater than the variability within the teachers in the traditional school group, indicating that teachers in charter schools differ from each other much more than do teachers in traditional schools regarding overall job satisfaction. The results indicated the two groups of schools were statistically different regarding Factor 10, which is community pressures, p = 0.025. The reexamination using the Bonferroni correction test on the statistical outcomes based on (p-values <0.005) showed that the schools were not significantly different in job satisfaction factors at the 99.5% or 0.005 adjusted level. A replication of the study in different geographical areas was proposed for future research. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
