Abstract | More and more Canadians are departing the country for international study, training and work experiences. Increasingly Canadian organizations and institutions are developing programs that further this mobility. However there is a dearth of resources and a lack of guidelines related to ensuring health and safety while abroad. "Worth the Risk" offers the reader practical approaches to ensuring the safety of students and learners. The paper is divided into six sections, the first being the Introduction. Section Two looks at different elements that set the stage for presenting the four approaches to risk management, including international perspectives on liability and risk; the dynamics of internationalization as they pertain to risk in study abroad; and some legal considerations around duty of care. Section Three presents the four approaches to risk management: Primarily Legal; Crisis Management; Encouraging Student Partnership; and Study Abroad and Program Review. It looks at the next steps for their application, and how the approaches interrelate. Section Four discusses the campus context and the role of the international educator. Section Five presents some conclusions. Section Six is a "Selected and Annotated Resource Guide" which aims at providing study abroad professionals with more sources of information. (ERIC). |
