AbstractLiterature on factors contributing to the retention of international students remained limited. The purpose of this study was to examine the factors related to retention of international undergraduate degree seeking students through conducting pairwise correlational analysis to test the relationship between retention and age, gender, country of citizenship, English proficiency, selected degree program, and grade point average (GPA). Pearson's product moment correlations were utilized to separately test the correlation between age, English proficiency and grade point average and retention. A chi-square test was computed on gender and retention. Finally a one-way ANOVA test was conducted separately on region of citizenship and selected degree program utilizing retention as a dependent variable. A significant statistical relationship was found between grade point average and retention for both fall 2004 and fall 2005 cohorts. No statistically significant relationships were identified between age, gender, citizenship, English proficiency and degree program and retention. These findings suggest that further research on international students is necessary to identify factors that impact retention. Grade point average was the single most significant factor identified in relation to retention for this study which was consistent with research findings in the literature. All other statistical findings suggest that for this study the indicators chosen were not related to retention.
