AbstractMinimal employable skills, poor work habits, and substance abuse are problems that often result in released female offenders' recidivating within 36 months of their prison release. Recidivism is further compounded when the female offender suffers from a learning disability. Research suggests that correctional education experiences do not address disabilities nor provide appropriate employable skills or positive work habits. In this narrative study, 5 released female offenders over 21 years old who lived in a southeastern urban area, suffered from a learning disability, and released from prison within the past 5 years were interviewed to understand their correctional education experiences. Recorded interviews of their correctional education experiences were analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings revealed that participants described their correctional education experiences as nonexistent due to limited or no courses offered, and degrading, as reported from insults received from the educational staff. In addition, learning disabilities were not identified during intake. Implications for positive social change include reevaluating correctional education as a viable rehabilitative strategy that can lead to increased gainful employment and reduced recidivism.
