Abstract | The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the life experiences and beliefs of high school teachers exhibiting highly effective classroom management skills. The research for this phenomenological study utilized the narrative inquiry method of data collection. This study investigates the life experiences and beliefs of nine teachers recognized as teacher of the year at the campus, district, or state level. The findings suggest that highly effective teachers share many values, expectations, and approaches that positively affect the classroom's culture and climate and help students grow academically. The findings also suggest effective classroom managers share the belief that they as educators are responsible for the class environment and student achievement. They accomplish these things by being proactive and advocating for students. Recurring themes include showing mutual respect toward students, protecting students' dignity, taking the responsibility to educate students, ongoing growth as a professional educator, the importance of leading by example, and clearly communicating expectations.
