AbstractThe material included in this bulletin deals essentially with present trends of courses in health education for teachers. A careful analysis was made of health instruction practices in 20 representative teachers colleges in as many States to ascertain the provisions being made for health instruction of students in the several curricula offered. Where possible, information was obtained first-hand from persons directly concerned with the health education program. In other instances where a visit to the institution in question could not be made, resort was made to correspondence and a careful study of school catalogs. Throughout the investigation one major purpose was kept in mind, namely, to provide an overview of current practices in health instruction and the problems encountered in making it an effective part of the pre-service training of teachers. An attempt has been made to answer the following questions on the basis of data found in the school catalogs of 20 representative institutions with health instruction programs: (1) What provisions have been made for health instruction of students in the curricula offered?; (2) What subject matter is found in the various health education courses?; (3) What courses in health education are available to graduate students?; (4) How extensive is the program of practice teaching and participation in school health programs?; and (5) What courses in health education are available to summer school students? The information in this bulletin is presented in five chapters, as follows: (1) Introduction; (2) Status of Health Education in Teachers Colleges and Normal Schools; (3) Health Education: The Teacher's Responsibility; (4) Health Instruction Practices in 20 Representative Teacher-Education Institutions; and (5) Review and Summary. Appendix A contains: (1) Names and location of teachers colleges included in this investigation; and (2) Program of health education in State teacher-educating institutions, 4-year pre-service preparation, January 1940, University of the State of New York. Appendix B contains a list of the colleges and universities in the United States offering courses in health education during the summer session of 1941. Individual sections contain footnotes. (Contains 6 tables.) [This bulletin was prepared with the assistance of Stella T. Sebern. Best copy available has been provided.] (ERIC).
