AbstractThis study explored master's level counselors-in-training perceptions of participation in a cohort model of education. Although the cohort model of education is widely used, research addressing its use in counselor education is scant. Literature regarding the cohort model of education from a variety of higher education programs was reviewed to inform this study. Convenience sampling methods were used to include participants from six different cohorts across two campuses of the same institution. Participants were all currently enrolled in a counselor training program at a mid-sized northwestern university. Q methodology was used to encourage participants to carefully consider and reflect on their perspectives of participation in a cohort. Q methodology was selected for the purpose of quantifying subjective information. Results of this study produced three significant factors identified as "family, community, and conversation," "cliques and cohorts," and "interpersonal skills." As a result of this study, recommendations were made related to counselor education programs and further research regarding the use of the cohort model of education.
