Abstract | I have chosen to be a servant leader. Servant leadership is a style of leadership that encourages leaders to serve others by meeting needs. Many leaders are fortunate enough to adapt and maintain a particular leadership style over long periods of time because they stay in a particular field. Others have the opportunity to practice and test their leadership style across different institutional cultures. This is a study about how as a servant leader I moved from a local church (LC) setting to a school (CCA) setting. I moved from assistant pastor to schoolmaster. At first, the move prompted a question that I began to process internally. I wanted to know how my servant leadership was being affected by this institutional change. This study used heuristic phenomenology as its methodology. In the heuristic section of the study, self-examination and reflection produced a better understanding of how I arrived at servant leadership. In the phenomenological section of the study, interviews that produced dialogues with board members, teachers, and parents provided an appreciation of leadership understandings and expectations among those with whom I work. The dialogues helped me discover how I am perceived as a leader by those I work with at CCA. The dialogues also helped me measure how closely aligned I am with servant leadership characteristics and qualities in the eyes of others within the CCA community. Finally, analyzing and reflecting on data gleaned from participants' stories is helping me to grow as a servant leader in order to continue to effectively lead the new learning community I serve.
