AbstractThe purpose of this study was to examine a conceptual framework for an individual's subjective perception of leisure that contributes to Subjective Well-Being (SWB). More specifically, this study was an attempt to examine causal relationships among social cognitive variables, subjective perception of leisure, and SWB. A survey was administered to a sample of Eastern Illinois University students. A total of 443 students at Eastern Illinois University responded to the survey. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to examine a hypothesized model of causal relationships among social cognitive variables, subjective perception of leisure, and SWB using the AMOS 4.0 program. The results of this study support a direct relationship between internal social cognitive variables (e.g., intrinsic satisfaction, emotions, and self-efficacy) and subjective perceptions of leisure. This study also found a positive relationship between external social cognitive variable (e.g., leisure knowledge) and subjective perception of leisure. In addition, this study suggested that subjective perception of leisure had a significant direct effect on SWB. An indirect relationship between social cognitive variables and SWB was also found in this study. These results provide an important contribution in the sense that social cognitive variable may have various causal effects on the individual's SWB through subjective perception of leisure. Furthermore, these findings provide evidence that Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) is an appropriate framework for the study of leisure and SWB. The SEM results highlight the need for future research to examine the frameworks that several social cognitive variables (e.g., perceived freedom and social relationships) were related to SWB through subjective perception of leisure. Future research is a necessary to understand the linkages between social cognitive variables, subjective perceptions of leisure and SWB from qualitative and longitudinal approaches. Additionally, the linkages should be examined by other samples such as older adults and different ethnic groups that leisure or recreation professionals might be aware of the diversity of these groups' experience.
