AbstractThis book explores the prominence of "race" in the lives of young children and their early childhood educators. It critiques the often presumed racial innocence of young children and shows instead how young children actively engage with the politics of race as they form their own identities. It challenges early childhood educators to engage with children's racialised identity politics, and shows how this often requires early childhood educators to rethink their own racialised identities. Amongst the challenges the book presents: it offers points of possibility and hope for creating more racially just early childhood classrooms. This book begins with "Thinking Differently: the Call and the Desire," by Glenda Mac Naughton and Karina Davis. Part I, Exploring the Politics of Children's Racialised Identities, contains the following: (1) Discourses of "Race" in Early Childhood: From Cognition to Power (Glenda Mac Naughton and Karina Davis); (2) Exploring "Race-identities" with Young Children: Making Politics Visible (Glenda Mac Naughton, Karina Davis, and Kylie Smith); (3) Intersecting Identities: Fantasy, Popular Culture and Feminised Race-Gender (Glenda Mac Naughton and Karina Davis); (4) Masculinities, Mateship, and Young Boys (Karina Davis and Glenda Mac Naughton); and (5) The Dynamics of Whiteness: Children Locating within/without (Karina Davis and Glenda Mac Naughton). Part II, Exploring the Politics of Adults' Racialised Identities, contains the following: (6) (Un)masking Cultural Identities: a Challenge for White Early Childhood Educators (Karina Davis); (7) On Race and Resistance: Transforming Racialised Identities: A Personal Journey (Merlyne Cruz); (8) Adults Constructing the Young Child, Race, and Racism (Sue Atkinson); (9) Languages Matter: My Subjective Postcolonial Struggle (Prasanna Srinivasan); and (10) Working within, beyond and through the Divides: Hopes and Possibilities for De-"racing" Early Childhood (Sue Atkinson, Merlyne Cruz, Karina Davis, Prasanna Srivinasan and Glenda Mac Naughton).
