AbstractThe reduction and/or elimination of future disciplinary infractions and increasing positive school climate were the two goals of a junior high school in Eastern Pennsylvania, for the 2007-2008 school year. In order to accomplish those goals the administrative staff used two disciplinary consequences to determine which one had the greatest impact in reducing and/or eliminating future disciplinary infractions and producing a positive school climate. These two consequences were after-school detentions/suspensions and the students' use of an evidence-based researched computer program. The effectiveness of either program was determined by the percentage of disciplinary consequences assigned to students throughout the school year. The data pertaining to the number of disciplinary consequences were accessed through the school's Pentamation program while the other means of collection was through the use of an existing school climate survey that the school district had compiled in order to evaluate the students' overall perception of the school's climate. Students' disciplinary records and the school's climate survey were used as the primary means of gathering information and identifying the statistical differences between the two variables. The statistical analysis of the data collected in this study indicates no increase in the number of reoccurrences of disciplinary behaviors by the students in Fall 07 compared to Spring 08. However, a decrease occurred in the number of detentions given from 2006-2007 compared to the 2007-2008 school year while the survey revealed no overall increase in positive school climate based on the findings of the survey.
