AbstractTrustees often confess to confusion about the responsibility of the governing board for the academic programs and policies of higher education institutions. During the 20th century, the teaching and research missions of American colleges and universities progressively became the special domain of the faculty. As academic disciplines became increasingly specialized and professionalized, members of lay governing boards found themselves unable, unwilling, or unwelcome to make judgments about the complex intellectual worlds of the faculty. To fulfill their stewardship effectively, the board must understand, monitor, evaluate, and exercise responsibility for the institution's academic programs and policies. The central theme of this document is that the board's responsibility for academic affairs should be considered in terms of the board's participation in collaborative strategic leadership. This paper offers advice on such topics as monitoring for accountability, containing academic costs, the strategic structure of academic programs, and ensuring sound budgets. (Contains 8 resources.)
