Abstract | The purpose of this quantitative quasi-experimental research study was to investigate the effect of a critical thinking program, Socratic seminars, in an effort to improve test scores of second grade students in language arts. Dependent and independent samples "t"-tests were used to compare mean pretest and posttest scores of second grade language arts students. The findings of the "t"-tests indicated the following: before the implementation of Socratic seminars, no significant difference in mean test scores of the control and treatment groups was found; a significant difference in test scores between the control group and the treatment group after implementation of Socratic seminars was identified; a significant difference in pretest and posttest scores of the control group was also identified; and no significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores of the treatment group was found. The analysis of data concluded that test scores dropped significantly without the implementation of Socratic seminars, and adequate test scores were maintained with the implementation of Socratic seminars.
