Abstract | Throughout her life, a woman makes decisions about behaviors, relationships, academic accomplishments, and achievements. What propels women to make these choices may be driven by an image of self. This feeling of self-worth or self-esteem is developed early in life with the help of her primary caregivers as found in her biological mother and father. Research on a mother's relationship with her child overshadows what one might find regarding a father's relationship with his child. This is particularly true of the relationship between a father and his daughter. If a the commitment of marriage between biological parents through a daughter's sixteenth birthday, the kind of father a daughter identifies with as she reflects on her relationship with him, and the attachment she feels toward her father could somehow predict her self-esteem, then professionals may be better able to understand women's behaviors and the decisions they make. This study looks at how these variables might help predict self-esteem. It also offers to add to any existing literature on this topic. Ultimately, it may help close the gap on the research centered on the father-daughter relationship by its contribution to the field as a psychological phenomenon.
