AbstractThe purpose of this study was to better understand the leadership philosophy and key strategic actions of Dr. David S. Dockery in relation to Jesus' Great Commandment. Dockery's leadership has been instrumental in shaping and defining the meaning of Christian education during his fourteen year tenure as president of Union University. During his term as president of Union University, Dockery has overseen tremendous institutional growth in the expansion of campus facilities, financial resources, and record student enrollment. In a broader capacity, Dockery's influence has been reflected throughout the Southern Baptist Convention and the evangelical community. This study analyzed and aligned Dockery's leadership utilizing James Kouzes and Barry Posner's perennial leadership classic, "The Leadership Challenge". The research procedure was a mixed method design that was conducted in four phases: documentation, survey, interview, and analysis. The sample population was racially diverse and included male and female participants who have served at Union from a short period of time up to three decades. This criterion offered a quasi-longitudinal analysis of Dockery's leadership actions from the inception of his presidency at Union. Documentation included the university magazine "Unionite" ranging in publication dates from 1995-2009, annual reports from 2007-2010, and the President's Report to the Board of Trustees (September, 2008-August, 2009). Further, several major contributions that enhanced the documentation phase included James Baggett's historical account of Union University from 1823-2000 and Dockery's textual contributions to the field of Christian higher education. The quantitative portion of this study utilized Kouzes and Posner's "Leadership Practice Inventory Observer: 3rd Edition" (LPI). The LPI has a well documented history that has consistently demonstrated its reliability as a valid test instrument. The participants included administrators, faculty, and staff. The mean scores on the LPI were calculated. The interview phase consisted of eleven participants including: Dockery, one trustee, and nine administrators and/or faculty. One semi-structured (open-ended) interview was conducted with each participant. All interviews were audio recorded and transcribed. The outcome of this study identified a substantial correlation between Dockery's leadership behaviors and Kouzes and Posner's "Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership." Further, this study reveals that Dockery demonstrates a consistent expression of Jesus' Great Commandment in his leadership philosophy, methodologies, and key strategic actions. The researcher's appraisal of Dockery's leadership is generalizable beyond Christian higher education. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
