Abstract | "The Schooled Society" examines how education has come to occupy a central place in society and how its function and form continue to evolve. Structured around the three core roles of modern schooling--selection, social organization, and socialization-the authors integrate classical and contemporary theoretical approaches to discuss schooling within a sociological framework. This new second edition is a concise, yet comprehensive, examination of schooling at the K-12 and post-secondary levels. The table of contents divides the book into five parts: (1) Introduction; (2) Selection: Inequality and Opportunity; (3) Social Organization and Legitimation; (4) Socialization; and (5) Conclusion.
