AbstractThis exploratory study was designed to determine if a normative structure exists among a community college student body by extending the work of Caboni, Braxton, Deusterhous, Mundy, McClendon, and Lee (2005). The study also sought to determine if the level of espousal for the norms differed across student characteristics. This study analyzed data collected using the College Student Behavior Inventory which asked students to rate behaviors on a scale that ranged from highly appropriate to highly inappropriate. A normative structure was identified and included behaviors that met the criteria for inviolable, admonitory and laudatory norms established by Braxton and Bayer (1999). Student characteristics such as gender, race/ethnicity, class standing, age, enrollment status, and future plans did influence the level of support for the normative structure among students. The identified normative structure was compared to the normative structure identified by Caboni et al. (2005) on the campus of a highly selective, predominately residential, research I university. In addition to supporting the earlier work of Caboni et al. (2005), this exploratory study adds to the research on normative structures within the community college setting and demonstrates that future research is warranted.
