Abstract | This study addressed the first year of alternate route teachers and the reasons they left, remained, and persisted in the classroom. The researcher conducted interviews with each participant to determine reasons for their attrition and retention; specifically, job satisfiers and job dissatisfiers were examined for each participant. Findings indicated the main reason for attrition was non-job renewal, with classroom management as a major contributor. Findings also indicated that collegial and student relationships, as well as administrative support, were vital to the success of the alternate route teacher. It can be concluded that alternate route teachers can experience success during the first year in the classroom if they receive support that is constant and conducive to their needs.
