AbstractManaging a business requires vigilance and diligence. Small business owners are often ignored by IT vendors and inundated by the choices of software applications and therefore, need help finding a viable operating software solution for small business decisions and development. The extent, if any, of a significant influence of operational software types on user satisfaction within small manufacturing businesses was the primary research question. User satisfaction with types of operational software was studied using a quantitative methodology to acquire and analyze data of operational software users. Seven user satisfaction components were identified and surveyed. The survey was comprised of 19 questions relating to the seven user satisfaction components and five questions used for data reliability. Data were obtained from the survey responses of key financial people employed by small manufacturing businesses throughout the United States with 99 or fewer employees. Verified survey response data were subjected to Cronbach's Alpha validity test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test of distribution normality for evaluation, and Kruskal-Wallis mean ranking evaluation. Testing was performed at the 95% confidence level for data that represented each use satisfaction component. Analysis of the data indicated that small business owners were equally satisfied with generic and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) operational software types but dissatisfied with custom operational software. Kruskal-Wallis testing of each user satisfaction component measured p less than 0.000 indicating significant differences existed among the three operational software types. "Post hoc" analysis yielded "p"-values less than 0.05 confirming the dissimilarities among generic, custom, and ERP operational software types. Types of operational software utilized in small manufacturing businesses influence user satisfaction. Operational software users ranked generic operational software first in four user satisfaction component tests and second in three; ERP operational software ranked first in three user satisfaction component tests and second in four. Recommendations for further study include isolation of possible population factors that influence user perceptions, focusing on factors that are similar within ERP and generic operational software, and investigation of custom operational software users with more specificity to determine root causes of dissatisfaction.
