AbstractIn recent years, there has been an alarming rise in psychological disorders diagnosed in children in the United States. As a result, the number of children in school with Individualized Education Plans (IEP) continues to grow in order to meet these children's special needs in the classroom. Despite the rise in psychological disorders, many children remain undiagnosed or fail to receive appropriate treatment. Early identification, treatment, and support for these children at school is essential to their psychological well-being. However, many elementary school teachers are not receiving the undergraduate education or continuing education needed to work with this population in their classrooms. This lack of education can lead to inappropriate referrals, lack of understanding the needs of students with psychological disorders, and a lack of identification of these students. In the proposed program, Mental Health in The Classroom, private school teachers will gain a basic understanding of psychological disorders that they commonly encounter in the classroom, including Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, Separation Anxiety Disorder, and Conduct Disorder. Through the program, teachers will increase their knowledge of psychological disorders, making them better equipped to make the appropriate referrals for their students and better understand the needs of these students. In addition, by increasing teacher's knowledge of mental health issues, the stereotypes that the teachers may hold regarding psychological disorders will decrease. Private school teachers will be the focus of this program as private schools are not required by law to abide by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) or the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) like the public school system. As a result, private school teachers do not need to meet the rigorous educational requirements to become a highly qualified teacher and as a result, they may lack less education or exposure to the field of psychology.
