Abstract | This Doctor of Ministry project builds upon the Church's catechetical commission to form adult Christian disciples, capable of revealing the kingdom of God. It is rooted in the Vatican II teaching found in "Lumen gentium," chapter five: all the baptized are called to partake in the Church's mission by virtue of their universal call to holiness. This project expands the meaning of vocation to include three levels: (1) the universal call to holiness, (2) expressly lived through one's particular state in life, and (3) becoming both unique and communal on a day to day basis. While evangelizers and catechists rightfully emphasize the universal call to holiness, systematic catechesis on one's vocation must also take place that addresses the concrete way in which one expresses her/his call to holiness within a state in life lived on a daily basis. For the adult Christian disciple, this "concrete way" finds visible expression through one of the primary states in life: the ordained clergy, marriage, the committed single life, or consecrated life. Vocation understood and taught in its fullest meaning then enables the teacher of religion to address life's deepest anthropological questions: As a Pilgrim People, who and whose are we, why are we here, where are we going and how do we get there? The project seeks to address the Church's need to systematically catechize youth regarding their unique-communal life call or personal vocation, by training catechists to teach with a vocation frame of reference. This is a simple method that can be applied to every age group, curriculum, and religious topic, by noting and teaching the vocation threads embedded within the goals and objectives of each lesson in an age-appropriate manner.
