Abstract | Student engagement has been shown to positively affect college students' experiences. Student engagement includes co-curricular and curricular activities designed to enrich and broaden the educational experience. Activities can include both in-class and out-of-class experiences. One way for students to become involved is through student government. Student government associations give students a formal structure for bringing their concerns to administrators and to create change on campus. This position paper examines student government as a way for adult learners to become engaged as college students. As a sub-population, adult learners have different needs, expectations, responsibilities, and goals than traditional-aged students. Because of the differences, traditional student activities and programs, such as student government bodies, may or may not serve as effective engagement mechanisms for adult learners. The paper includes a review of the literature on adult learners and student engagement, as well as recommendations for including adult learners in student government associations. (As Provided). |
