AbstractThis project examines the contributions of Interfaith Ministry to Union College with the hope of amplifying, or "turning up the volume" of this work in this ministry setting. Grounded in the historical realities of a small liberal arts college, the work explores models of chaplaincy in higher education on this specific campus and beyond. Acknowledging the importance and impact of a theological lens for this project, the author's particular experiences of a Triune God suggests a back drop for interfaith ministry practiced by a Christian clergywoman. Faith development and institutional culture, equally meaningful aspects of work in this field, provide further contexts for constructing and implementing change using Arthur Chickering's "institutional amplification" as a method for achieving the desired outcomes. Using a series of tools designed to assess existing knowledge about interfaith ministry while as the same time educating participants to its programs and resources, the method for this project was multi-faceted. The first prong of this effort involved information gathering via a survey and a serious of focus groups. These two forums for exchange pointed to three similar realities in need of change: a lack of clarity in the role of the Interfaith Chaplain, lack of financial resources for the work and a lack of visibility. Conclusions from the first phase of the project served as the basis for the second phase of the change effort or "amplification." Information sharing became the project focus. This method relied upon the creation of a mission and vision statement, one on one interviews, a workshop designed for all Student Affairs Professionals and the creation of a flyer. Results for this project are significant albeit primarily antidotal. Since the project began, however, interfaith work at Union College experienced several significant changes. For the first time the Multi-faith Council became a college club allowing them to access student fees for programming. A Prayer and Meditation Room now exists in the student center. Funding for four religious groups not receiving money from outside sources became a reality. And the Strategic plan for the College now includes directives about diversity that includes religious pluralism.
