Abstract | This is the culminating report of a three-year study of seven small schools in Washington State. It examines adult learning in the context of school redesign and highlights three schools where teachers are beginning to capitalize on adult learning opportunities to turn the corner to instructional change. In our view, effective adult learning serves improved student learning and requires a combination of individual and collective inquiry and practice. We found a progression from reinforcement of colleagues to collaboration, and finally, interdependence. Seven appendices are included: (1) Methodology; (2) Small School Grants and Case Study Schools; (3) Gates Foundation Attributes and Essential Components; (4) Washington State Context; (5) Resources for Adult Learning; (6) West Valley High School Instructional Framework; and (7) References. (Contains 6 figures.) (As Provided). |
