AbstractCheck & Connect was created in a five year period from 1990 to 1995. The original manual, entitled "Keeping Kids in School: Using Check & Connect for Dropout Prevention" and written by David Evelo, Mary Sinclair, Christine Hurley, Sandra Christenson, and Martha Thurlow, was published in 1996 (ED398701). This newly revised Check & Connect manual incorporates information from the original manual and provides an update from the Institute on Community Integration's research over the last 18 years. It describes the steps to implement this research-based model for engaging students at school and with learning. The manual also presents the theory underlying the intervention, describes the role of the Check & Connect mentor and coordinator, and outlines the key components of Check & Connect. This manual is comprised of eight sections. Section 1, Introduction to Check & Connect, gives a basic description of Check & Connect. It describes the importance of the components and elements of the student engagement model are underscored. Section 2, Implementation Steps for Check & Connect, describes the eight steps or procedures for successful implementation of Check & Connect. These steps begin with how to determine indicators of disengagement at your school or community site and end with ways to evaluate the impact of your application of Check & Connect. Section 3, Key Personnel for Implementation of Check & Connect, describes the role and skills of the mentors and the program coordinator. These individuals are the key personnel for implementation. Section 4, Unique Features of Check & Connect, describes the two unique and defining features of Check & Connect. Strategies used to achieve a person-environment fit for intervention and relationship-building with students and teachers are provided. Section 5, Implementation Lessons and Considerations, describes the six lessons for effective implementation of Check & Connect learned in the authors' studies. Section 6, Evidence of Check & Connect Impact, describes the evidence for Check & Connect and provides references for readers to obtain additional information and details. Section 7, Modifying Check & Connect for Different Contexts, describes ways to adopt and adapt Check & Connect to fit your school or community context. Guidelines for using the label, Check & Connect, are noted and brief illustrative examples are given. Section 8, Future Directions, describes the future directions of this line of research and provides training and technical assistance information. Appended are: (1) Sample Check & Connect Referral Form; (2) Sample Check & Connect Intake Form; (3) Check & Connect Monitoring Sheets; (4) Quick Reference for Intensive Interventions; (5) Home-School Communication Guidelines; (6) Check & Connect Job Descriptions; and (7) Menu of Potential Interventions. (Contains 10 tables and 2 figures.) [Additional contributors to this manual include: David R. Johnson, Donna Johnson, Jean Ness, and Karen Stout.] (ERIC).
