Abstract | This report examines the class size conditions in New York City's lowest performing schools--the 408 Schools in Need of Improvement (SINI) or Schools Requiring Academic Progress (SRAP) identified by the state. This report examines a detailed analysis of class size and enrollment data for each grade in each of these schools and determines how many classes are needed, including pre-Kindergarten, to reduce class size at all grade levels. Further, the report makes recommendations, where possible, on how to meet the needs of each SINI/SRAP school within existing building space and through re-zoning. Finally, the report factors in the impact of the City's Capital Plan through the creation of new classrooms. The analysis finds that 2,522 classrooms are needed to reduce class size in the 408 SINI/SRAP schools to the BRICKS class size standard. Appended are: (1) SINI/SRAP Schools--Master List/Classroom Analysis; (2) SINI/SRAP Schools Organized by District with Utilization Rates; (3) Summary of SINI/SRAP Space Needs by District & Categories; (4) SINI/SRAP Schools with Reduced Class Size; (5) SINI/SRAP Schools with Available Space to Reduce Class Size; (6) SINI/SRAP Schools with Space Sharing Plan; (7) SINI/SRAP Schools Needing Classrooms from the Capital Plan; (8) Potential Impact of Capital Plan on SINI/SRAP Schools; (9) SINI/SRAP Schools Missing Average Class Size Data; and (10) Adding Pre-K Classrooms to SINI/SRAP Schools.
