AbstractThis book focuses on contemporary accreditation, why it matters, and how it can be done effectively. The author covers historical background, getting started, strategies for achieving accreditation, and visions for future academic success, with examples and case studies. Accreditation is the primary way of ensuring the quality of higher education to its many constituencies. Although more desirable than direct government oversight, but critics say the current system of institutional peer review is a compromise between accreditors and college presidents, rather than a rigorous set of common standards. The volume questions whether current accreditation meets all the needs of its many audiences: a public that wants assurance of quality; legislators who want accountability and results; and faculty who want a smooth process and recognition for their hard work. Following Foreword and Acknowledgments, the book contains five sections: (1) Why Does Accreditation Matter? (Background of Accreditation; Quality Improvement and Accreditation; Concerns About Accreditation; and What Is Needed?); (2) The Matters of Accreditation (The Self-Study; On-Site Evaluation; and after the Accreditation Review); (3) Strategies for Achieving Accreditation (Planning an Interpretive Approach; Focused Reviews to Influence Communication; Staffing and Institutional Culture in Facilitating Accreditation; Using Symbolic Actions in an Interpretive Strategy for the Accreditation Process; and Interpretive Approaches to Reporting and Budgeting); (4) Linking Quality Initiatives with Accreditation; and (5) Conclusion. Five appendixes are included: (1) CHEA Participating and Recognized Organizations; (2) Accreditation Eligibility Requirements; (3) Accreditation Team Visit Schedule; (4) Potential Decisions by an Accreditation Agency; and (5) Institutional Newsletter Content Before Accreditation Visit. The book also contains name and subject indexes. [For Volume 30, Number 3 in this series, see ED501184.] (ERIC).
