AbstractUnderperforming institutions frequently face financial and enrollment challenges, and/or lack a sense of direction and momentum. There is no single or easy approach to turning things around and putting the institution on track to positive development. In 1983, Drury University in Springfield, Missouri, faced declining enrollments, a growing current deficit, aging buildings and 9 individuals in the president's chair in 18 years. Significant change has taken place over the past two decades, and the school has overcome multiple challenges to become recognized today as a school on the move. Recognizing that every institution has its own tradition, culture and leadership style, the authors distill some key elements that may offer a model for similarly-situated institutions, including: (1) High hopes and expectations, often accompanying new leadership; (2) Ongoing communication, meetings, and engagement with constituents; (3) Showing quick and evident progress, not necessarily part of a grand overall plan; (5) A significant new initiative; (6) Engagement of constituents in a planning process that focuses on identity, mission, strengths, weaknesses and opportunities; (7) Strategic use of consultants as necessary but primary reliance on campus officials; and (8) Collaboration and cooperation with community institutions, strengthening all involved. Continuity of effective, committed leadership is essential to achieving broad goals of institutional development and improvement, requiring energy, patience and persistence combined with sensitive, but firm leadership. As the authors conclude, it is as much art as science. (ERIC).
