| Abstract | The purpose of this descriptive study was to explore whether there is a relationship between the age at which music lessons begin and language reading proficiency as an adult. Such a relationship may indicate that transfer of learning takes place between the processes of learning to read language and learning to read music. One hundred forty-seven subjects, ages fifteen and up, took a standardized reading test and filled out a music experience questionnaire. The scores of the reading test were compared to the age at which individuals began taking music lessons. Scores were grouped in several different ways, including the average age when lessons were begun and by current age cohorts. Results show that there is a statistically significant relationship between language reading proficiency and early training in music. By emphasizing music literacy at an early age, music educators can provide optimal conditions for transfer of learning between the two processes.
