Abstract | Students more familiar with failure than success can carry inhibiting levels of fear, and mature students are twice as likely to drop out of Higher Education in their first year than younger students. Through its use of conversational and supportive tones, this study guide puts readers at ease assisting the transition to academic study. The author makes no assumptions in terms of readers' prior knowledge--explanations are full, and each chapter contains an introduction and a summary. There are also exercises and many examples of students' writing. This accessible book will be an invaluable companion for the mature student, guiding them through what they need to know in order to write clear English. The guide contains four parts and and eighteen sections. Part I: The Main Picture, contains: (1) Understanding a Text; and (2) Writing an Essay. Part II: Writing for Different Purposes, contains: (3) Style; (4) Letters; (5) Creative Writing; (6) Articles; (7) Reports; (8) Summaries; (9) Oral Presentations; and (10) Exams. Part III: Nuts And Bolts, contains: (11) Writing Clear Sentences; (12) Using Punctuation; (13) Getting Conversation on Paper; (14) Spelling Strategies; (15) Understanding Parts of Speech; and (16) Typical Errors. Part IV: Moving On, contains: (17) Your CV; and (18) Covering Letters for Job Applications. (ERIC). |
