Abstract | Building equity into Australia's vocational education and training (VET) system is a key component of the National Strategy for Vocational Education and Training 2004-2010. This book of readings aims to contribute to this important facet of the national strategic plan. The book reviews the achievements equity groups have made, reports on the issues they face, and discusses how to integrate equity and diversity management models into a framework to achieve a more inclusive VET system. It includes chapters on the five recognised equity groups: (1) women; (2) people from non-English speaking backgrounds; (3) people from rural and remote areas; (4) people with a disability; and (5) Indigenous Australians. Additional chapters consider other possible groups such as, early school leavers, older workers, men, people in correctional services, and people with low literacy skills, and examines the merit of these becoming equity groups. Following an overview by Kaye Bowman, chapters include: (1) Equity in VET: An Overview of the Data for Designated Equity Groups (Tom Dumbrell, Rowena de Montfort, and Wendy Finnegan); (2) Choice, Participation, Outcomes: Women in VET 2003 (Mary Dickie and Ingrid Fitzgerald); (3) Beyond Equity? Indigenous People's Rights and the National VET System (Bob Boughton and Deborah Durnan); (4) Working Towards an Indigenous Training Model: Learning from Gamarrwa Nuwul Landcare, Yirrkala (Banduk Marika, Colin Lane, Helen Smith, and Leanne Reinke); (5) VET-ability: The capacity of the Australian VET system to be Inclusive for People with a Disability (Kate Barnett); (6) Inequity in Australian Vocational Education and Training by Location (Barry Golding and Sandra Pattison); (7) Tangled Threads: Issues Faced by Non-English Speaking Background People in Vocational Education and Training (Veronica Volkoff); (8) Apprentices and Trainees from Non-English Speaking Backgrounds: Participation and Outcomes (Cheng Lian Sim and Loukia Zinopoulos); (9) People with Poor Language, Literacy, and Numeracy Skills: A Hidden Equity Group? (Sue Kilpatrick and Pat Millar); (10) Equity in Education and Training in Correctional Services Institutions (Peter Noonan); (11) Early School Leavers and VET (Richard Teese); (12) Vocational Learning in Schools as an Equity Strategy (Brian Knight); (13) Older Workers (Mark Cully); (14) Who's Doing the Hunting and Gathering?
