AbstractCanada is facing a new set of challenges. The first challenge facing Canada is the rising economic power of countries such as India and China. These countries have traditionally competed on the basis of their large, low-cost labour pools, but are now making major investments to insert themselves into knowledge-intensive, high value-added sectors. The second challenge facing Canada lies in the population's own demographics. Simply put, the Canadian population is getting older. As the baby boom generation leaves the work force in ever greater numbers, it is essential that Canada's labour market grow in both size and productivity to drive the future economic growth that will determine this country's ability to sustain health and social programs and improve the quality of life for all Canadians. With the necessary resources, Canada's universities can and will play a key role in increasing Canada's productivity. This document is divided into following four sections: (1) New Challenges; (2) Universities Play a Key Role in Increasing Productivity; (3) The Increased Role Universities Can Play; and (4) Benefits to Canadians. [This document represents a brief submitted to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada.] (ERIC).
