AbstractWriting for publication is not easy, but getting published is an essential part of professional development. Whether a novice or an experienced literacy writer, a K-12 teacher, or a university-level educator, writers will benefit from the insights in this book. The editors have organized the book into four sections that offer guidelines for: (1) getting started; (2) writing for journals, newspapers, and magazines; (3) writing and editing books; and (4) responding to revise-and-resubmit and rejection decisions. Altogether, the 17 contributors present more than 80 guidelines to help the reader deal with the often times puzzling and harrowing experiences of the publishing process. And they should know--collectively, their writing has appeared in 1,275 journal articles and 722 books. Chapters also include highlights and closing thoughts to recap major themes, and author reflections from a wide range of respected, published authors to cheer you on as you struggle and succeed with your writing. Plus, an epilogue synthesizes the top 10 guidelines, or pearls of wisdom, that appear most frequently throughout the book. Following a foreword (Richard L. Allington) and a preface, this book is divided into four sections and 10 chapters. Section I, Beginning the Publishing Process, presents the initial chapters of the book: (1) Establishing a Mindset to Write for Publication (Shelley B. Wepner); (2) Write from the Start (Linda B. Gambrell, Jacquelynn A. Malloy, and Lesley Mandel Morrow); and (3) "Always Stick With Your Buddy": Collaboration and Writing for Publication (Nancy D. Padak and Timothy Rasinski). Section II, Writing for Journals and Other Outlets, presents the next chapters: (4) Publishing in Professional Journals (Judith P. Mitchell and D. Ray Reutzel); (5) Writing for Research Journals (Donna E. Alvermann and David Reinking); and (6) Writing for Other Outlets (John Micklos, Jr.). Next, Section III, Writing Books and Edited Volumes, includes chapters: (7) Writing Books (James Flood and Diane Lapp); and (8) Editing Books: Reflections and Suggestions (Cathy Collins Block and John N. Mangier). Finally, Section IV, Responding to Revise-and-Resubmit and Rejection Decisions, concludes the book with the remaining chapters: (9) Responding to Revise-and-Resubmit Invitations (William A. Henk); and (10) Overcoming Rejection (Michael Pressley). The following are appended: (1) U.S. and International Literacy and Literacy-Related Associations; (2) State Literacy Associations and Their Journals and Newsletters; (3) Literacy Book Publishers in the United States; and (4) Books on Writing for Publication. An Epilogue, Top 10 Ideas for Getting Published; an author index; and a subject index are also included. (ERIC).
