| Abstract | In this paper, I describe characteristics of programs developed for adolescents who are struggling with literacy. The paper references both a chart I developed to compare and contrast those characteristics and a review guide I created to help schools make principled decisions when choosing programs for use with their students. The chart and the review guide should help schools make good decisions regarding the programs in which they invest. Once decisions are made, the difficult work begins--the work of implementation. With a well-chosen program and a dedicated group of teachers who have time to learn, reflect, and plan, it is likely that achievement in literacy will continue to rise. Appended are: (1) Adolescent Literacy Intervention Programs Chart; and (2) Adolescent Literacy Intervention Programs Review Guide. (Author). |
