AbstractMany teachers have probably read numerous pieces of writing that reflect students personal lives but don't reveal new understandings about themselves and their world. Use this resource to take upper elementary students writing to a deeper level with a critical approach that focuses on questioning multiple viewpoints, exploring social issues, and taking action to promote social justice. Teachers will discover how integrating critical literacy into writers workshop engages students in social action as they actively critique the connections between their personal lives and society. Following a preface, the following chapters are included: (1) Chapter 1: Taking the First Steps Toward Critical Literacy; (2) Chapter 2: Viewing Writer's Workshop Through a Critical Lense; (3) Chapter 3: Writer's Workshop: The Only Game in Town?; (4) Chapter 4: Students as Text Workers; (5) Chapter 5: Talker's Workshop: Expanding Writing Resources to Include Social Themes; (6) Chapter 6: Theme Search: First Steps Toward Writing Social Narratives; (7) Chapter 7: Revising Writer's Workshop; (8) Chapter 8: Complicating Classroom Life; (9) Chapter 9: Social Narratives: Bridging Personal Lives and Social Purposes; and (10) Chapter 10: Answering Questions About Critical Writer's Workshop.
