AbstractThis document reviews a dozen history textbooks. The following American History textbooks are reviewed: (1) Joyce Appleby, Alan Brinkley, and James M. McPherson, The American Journey: Building a Nation (Glencoe, 2003), and Joyce Appleby, Alan Brinkley, Albert S. Broussard, James M. McPherson, and Donald A. Ritchie, The American Republic Since 1877 (Glencoe, 2003); (2) Paul Boyer, The American Nation (Holt, Rinehart & Winston, 2003); (3) Henry W. Bragdon, Samuel P. McCutcheon, and Donald A. Ritchie, History of a Free Nation (Glencoe, 1998); (4) Andrew Cayton, Elizabeth Israels Perry, Linda Reed, and Alan W. Winkler, America: Pathways to the Present (Prentice Hall, 2003); (5) Gerald A. Danzer, J. Jorge Klor de Alva, Larry S. Krieger, Louise E.Wilson, Nancy Woloch, The Americans (McDougall Littell, 2003); and (6) Gary B. Nash, American Odyssey: The United States in the Twentieth Century (Glencoe, 2002). The following World History textbooks are reviewed: (1) Roger B. Beck, Linda Black, Larry S. Krieger, Phillip C. Naylor, Dahia Ibo Shabaka, Modern World History: Patterns of Interaction (McDougall Littell, 2003); (2) Elisabeth Gaynor Ellis and Anthony Esler,World History: Connections to Today (Prentice Hall, 2003); (3) Mounir A. Farah and Andrea Berens Karls,World History: The Human Experience (Glencoe, 2001); (4) William Travis Hanes III, ed.,World History: Continuity and Change (Holt, Rinehart & Winston, 1999); (5) Sue Miller, ed.,World History: People & Nations (Holt, Rinehart & Winston, 2000); and (6) Jackson S. Spielvogel,World History: The Human Odyssey (National Textbook Company, 1999, Glencoe, 2003). Reviewers were asked to grade each text according to the following twelve criteria: (1) Accuracy; (2) Context; (3) Organization; (4) Selection of Supporting Material; (5) Lack of Bias; (6) Historical Logic; (7) Literary Quality; (8) Use of Primary Sources; (9) Historical Soundness; (10) Democratic Ideas; (11) Interest Level; and (12) Graphics. In addition to rating the books according to these specific criteria, reviewers were asked to explain what they liked most and disliked about each textbook. The following are appended: (1) Graphs 1-6: American History Criteria by Textbook; (2) Graphs 7-18: American History Textbooks by Criterion; (3) Graphs 19-24: World History Criteria by Textbook; (4) Graphs 25-36: World History Textbooks by Criterion; and (5) Graphs 37-38: Overall Textbook Grades by Reviewer.
