Abstract | This book shows that children innately learn a great deal about the arts. The book argues that involvement and immersion are the ways in which children feel welcome to write, move, create, draw, and otherwise express ideas about art and music. It offers teaching suggestions to classroom teachers and non-specialists so classroom reading activities can be extended into group discussions, cooperative learning arts projects, and creative performances. Included are extensive resource lists for further integrated arts teaching in the classroom. Chapters in the book are: (1) "Why Should I Have Arts in My Classroom? Which Arts?"; (2) "What Is Arts Integration"; (3)"How Can the Arts Be Infused into Reading and Language Arts Instruction in My Classroom?"; (4) "How Can Poetry Be Made Exciting for My Students?"; (5) "But What about the Other Subjects (Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies)"; (6) "How Do We Teach about Artists and Their Craft?"; (7) "But, I Really Don't Sing, Draw, Paint, Act, or Dance and There's Just No Time, Space, Supplies, Budget, Support, Interest..."; (8) "This Won't Work with My Class..."; (9) "How Can I Assess Student Learning within Integrated Arts Lessons?"; and (10) "What Happens When They Go Home?" Contains an extensive bibliography. (BT) |
