AbstractThe recognition within the past few decades of the American Deaf Community as an indigenous cultural and linguistic minority group has altered the previous view of deaf individuals by the "hearing world" as being handicapped or disabled. The primary goals of this technical report are: (1) to compare a cultural view of deafness to the traditional, pathological view of deafness; (2) to provide a brief description of the Deaf Community, their language, and culture; (3) to describe communication patterns and parenting issues in families with deaf parents and hearing children; (4) to examine the role of the hearing child in a deaf family and how that experience affects their functioning in the hearing world; and (5) to discuss important considerations and resources for providers who work with hearing children and their deaf parents. The report includes extensive references, an annotated bibliography, and a list of available resources from the CLAS Web site. (Author/SG)
