AbstractThe primary purpose of the social studies is to help young people, as future culturally diverse, democratic citizens in an interdependent world, develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens. Underlying this scope and sequence is the principle that neither gender, economic status, nor cultural background limits a student's ability to understand social studies and develop civic efficacy. The goals and objectives of the state of North Carolina's course of study for the social studies closely parallels the national social studies curriculum standards. The national content standards for history, geography, economics, and psychology support this guide and provide guidance for implementing the strands across the curriculum. The guide is divided into 19 sections: (1) "Preface"; (2) "Philosophy"; (3) "Purpose"; (4) "Program Description"; (5) "The Role of Disciplines in the K-12 Social Studies Curriculum" (History; Geography; Economics; Political Science; Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology; Sequence; Skills); (6) "Elementary Social Studies" (K-5); Middle School Social Studies (6-8); (7) "Secondary Social Studies" (9-12); (8) "African American Studies"; (9) "American Government"; (10) "American Indian Studies"; (11) "Contemporary Issues in North Carolina History"; (12) "Contemporary Law and Justice"; (13) "Economics; Geography in Action"; (14) "Latino American Studies"; (15) "Psychology"; (16) "Sociology"; and (17) "Bibliography" (n=18).
