Abstract | This book presents a conceptual model of dance education that embraces dance as an art form and disseminates it through learning experiences in dancing, dance making, and dance appreciation. It is intended to help dance educators broaden their understanding of the dance content that is appropriate for their students and educational setting. The book contains step-by-step instructions for teaching dance to students in preschool through college settings, plus sample units for 10 different dance forms divided into four categories (creative movement and creative dance, recreational dance, concert dance, and aerobic dance). The 14 chapters are: (1) "Envisioning Dance Education"; (2) "Teaching Dance and Cross-Disciplinary Knowledge"; (3) "Observing and Analyzing the Teaching and Learning Situation"; (4) "Guiding Students in Learning Dance"; (5) "Understanding Dance Teaching Methods"; (6) "Organizing and Managing the Dance Class"; (7) "Analyzing the Learner and the Learning Environment"; (8) "Categorizing Dance Forms and Their Artistic Demands"; (9) "Developing the Lesson Plan"; (10) "Selecting the Appropriate Assessment Tools for Dance"; (11) "Writing and Delivering the Lesson Plan"; (12) "Creating a Curriculum"; (13) "Sample Units for Dance Forms"; and (14) "Culminating Curriculum Portfolio." (Chapters contain references.) (SM) |
