Abstract | This report, presented in English and Spanish, profiles nine successful parent leadership programs in communities throughout California. Common factors contributing to the programs' success are parents learning by doing, acquiring knowledge and skills, learning from other parents, and making a personal connection. Other contributing factors are programs listening to parents, supporting the whole parent, supporting ongoing connections, and building partnerships with schools. The program descriptions include: "MALDEF: Parent/School Partnership" (Irene Moore); "Head Start: Welcoming Parents to Grow" (Eve Pearlman); "Parent Institute: Teaching Parents to be Leaders in Their Children's Education" (Irene Moore); "The Right Question Project: Tools for Advocacy" (Eve Pearlman); " Comadres/Compadres: Leaders and Mentors" (Irene Moore); "Parent Voices: Learning by Doing Creates Leaders" (Eve Pearlman); "PICO: Step-by-Step Leadership Development" (Irene Moore); "PLANtoLEAD: A 'Democracy School' for Parents" (Larissa Branin); and "Promotoras: Community Health Leaders" (Eve Pearlman). The program descriptions include information on keys to success, strategies, and training basics. Includes a list of national, statewide, and regional organizations. (SM) |
