AbstractIntended for parents of children with disabilities, this guide offers guidance for writing letters to the professionals involved in a child's special education. Basic information about the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) precedes a flow chart breakdown of the 10 steps in the special education process under IDEA. Suggestions for letter writing in general are then offered. The bulk of the guide consists of suggestions and sample letters covering various situations, such as when a parent wants to: (1) discuss a problem; (2) request an evaluation for special education services; (3) request an independent evaluation; (4) request a copy of the child's records; (5) request a meeting to review the child's Individualized Education Program; (6) request that the child's placement be changed; (7) request that the school give prior written notice; (8) request mediation; (9) inform the school of the intention to place the child in a private school at public expense; (10) request a due process hearing; (11) file a complaint with the state; (12) write a follow-up letter; and (13) give positive feedback.
