AbstractIn this California state curriculum model for grade 7, "World History and Geography: Medieval Society," students study the life, work, and philosophy of Cesar Chavez. They learn about the ideas and philosophies that have withstood the test of time and emerged in Chavez's work and actions. Students examine Chavez's ancestral heritage link to early civilizations of the Americas and how Chavez supported the Chicano movement and its leaders who took pride in their Indian heritage and culture. The curriculum presents a history/social science framework; addresses history/social science state standards; sets a context; poses a focus question; cites expected learning outcomes; discusses assessment; lists key concepts; suggests an essential vocabulary, primary sources, and visuals; and provides a detailed step-by-step procedure for implementing each of the six lessons. Lessons are: (1) "'La Virgen de Guadalupe' and the UFW"; (2) "Chavez, a Renaissance Man"; (3) "The Image of the Aztec Eagle"; (4) "Magna Carta and 'La Causa'"; (5) "The Reformers: Martin Luther and Cesar E. Chavez"; and (6) "Service for Citizenship." A biography and photographs of Cesar Chavez are included. (BT)
