AbstractNoting that book clubs offer a balanced approach that respects the highly individualized nature of learning and utilizes guided reading, shared reading, listening, speaking, writing, and critical thinking skills, this book proposes how to organize and manage book clubs for young readers. The book provides suggestions on how to accomplish the following in book clubs: teach, practice, and emphasize comprehension skills from the earliest grades; move reading instruction into more intimate, small-group contexts; use small-group time to study books; and engage students with more difficult texts. Chapters in the book are: (1) What's Theory Got to Do With It?; (2) Book Clubs - The Big Picture; (3) Getting Down to the Nuts and Bolts; (4) Book Clubs - A Five-Day Course of Study; (5) Kindergarten: Book Clubs for Our Youngest Readers; (6) First Grade: Sprinting Toward Understanding; (7) Second Grade: Becoming Lifelong Learners; (8) What About Assessment?; and (9) A Classroom Where Book Clubs Thrive. Three appendixes contain: a lesson plan for "The Carrot Seed"; a lesson plan for "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie"; and a lesson plan for "The Three Billy Goats Gruff."
