AbstractChinese students have particular problems with the intersection of two English verb classes: transitional event verbs and state verbs of having and being. The problem is that these two verb classes appear to "pair up." Chinese students tend to be unaware that these two classes pair up. This study investigated whether lexical aspect could be taught. Participants were 115 Chinese university students in a freshman English course. Half of the students received 4 hours of explicit instruction and corrective feedback on the use of verb pairs over 2 months, while a control group of students did not receive this instruction and feedback. Teaching materials focused on the event/state pairs and the general notion of lexical aspect. Pictures were used to depict transitional event and state meanings and to give students a feeling for how the pairs interacted when placed along a time continuum. Results from periodic testing of both groups of students indicated that unlike the control group, the experimental group showed significant improvement on tests covering the use of event/state verbal pairs.
