Abstract | Students play the roles of delegates to the U.S. Constitutional convention in this grade 8 interdisciplinary history and language arts unit. After reviewing the activities of the men involved in the convention (Patrick Henry, George Mason, Luther Martin, Richard Henry Lee, John Jay, James Madison, and Alexander Hamilton), participants prepare speeches that represent the position on ratification of a delegate they are assigned. The student guide provides detailed instructions on how to complete the activity, contains a list of resources, and includes Internet sites. The teacher's guide ties the unit to California state standards, provides adaptations for special needs students, and gives several suggestions on how to conduct and evaluate the unit. (RJC) |
