Lead stories include: authorities arrest a man accused of starting the Rodeo fire in Arizona, the U.S. refuses to support the International Criminal Court, Steve Fossett completes the first solo balloon flight around the world, and President Bush salutes freedom and its heroes on a significant July 4th (July 1-3, 5); the 14th International AIDS Conference convenes in Barcelona, Spain, CNN's Maggie Lake looks at corporate credibility in America, President Bush delivers a speech on corporate responsibility, business leaders and consumers react to Bush's speech, and many people in developing nations cannot afford HIV/AIDS drugs (July 8-12); SEC Chairman Harvey Pitt says he will not step down, Wall Street's woes are causing global market jitters, CNN Student News' Joel Hochmuth talks to an economic forecaster about trends in the stock market, Italy experiences its worst drought in 30 years, and the Irish Republican Army issues an apology for civilian lives lost in Northern Ireland (July 15-19); investors respond to the market's downward slide, WorldCom files for bankruptcy, financial institutions may have been involved in the Enron case, Lastminute.com survives the dot-com storm and a new Web site is dedicated to the defense of Martha Stewart, and the IMF tries to help Argentina resolve its economic problems (July 22-26); and nine miners are rescued three days after being trapped in a flooded mine shaft, rescued miners speak at a hospital news conference, and Surveyor Bob Long used GPS technology to steer rescuers to the trapped miners (July 29-31).
